Frequently occurring workplace injuries

The most frequently occurring physical workplace injuries and illnesses include:

  • Lower back pain and sprains

  • Neck pain and sprains

  • Shoulder injuries including rotator cuff sprains and tendon tears

  • Synovitis – Tenosynovitis

  • Knee injuries

  • Wrist or hand sprains

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Acute occupational dermatitis

  • Acute occupational asthma

Each of these conditions is outlined briefly in context of history, symptom patterns, differential diagnosis, suggested investigations and recommended treatments. Red flags (physical symptoms indicative of more serious conditions or non-resolution) and Yellow flags (psycho-social factors contributing to possible non-resolution of symptoms and successful return to work) are also outlined. Suggested alternate duties and a flow chart of strategies in particular times frames is suggested according to Dr Ross Mills’ (occupational health physician) guidelines.
